FAQs – What happens if the weather sucks?

Storm clouds slowly cover the sunny skies over a prairie field.

Have you ever worried about what happens when you plan a photo session and then the weather turns bad the day of? Well, you’ll want to check out this post then, because this is all about what happens if the weather sucks!!

Inclement weather can be amazing to watch; lightning puts on an amazing show with the thunder just shaking the sky, and a complete downpour can be the perfect opportunity to cuddle up inside with a great book and a hot cup of tea.

But when it comes to having plans, bad weather can be a dampener or everything – spirits, joy, fun…all that jazz. Don’t worry though, when you have a photo session with me, you have a couple options to what you want to do.

Rolling hills of green stand out against a cloudy, rain-threatening sky.

1) Embrace the Rain

Photos can be SO cool if you choose to dance in the rain. And I have a cover for my gear so we can totally embrace the wet. Whether you opt for a family session, or you’re rained out during your wedding, making the most of the crummy weather can make for some super amazing photos.

Rained out wedding photos take on such an intimate, playful feel. You have more reason to get up close and starry-eyed with your partner, which means more super cozy images.

When it comes to family sessions, you might find your kids the most excited when they can do something like splash in puddles. Find everyone matching raincoats, wear rainboots, and snuggle up under a big ol’ umbrella, and you create some amazing memories!!

2) Choose an Indoor/Sheltered Location

Sometimes weather is too severe to play in. If lightning flashes straight above us, the winds gust too much for you to feel comfortable, or the temperature drops below lovely (like lately), choosing someplace indoors is a great alternative. Yeah, it may not share the same appeal as being out in nature, but there is so much that can be done, say, in your own home. Like playing hide-and-seek, joining in on a group video game, baking something together (great for younger kiddos), playing charades…the options are endless!!

Or out doing an activity somewhere. Like going bowling, entering an escape room, or simply finding someplace to cozy up together and watch the storm.

The main thing is that there are options, and you aren’t stuck having crappy weather photos.

3) Reschedule

When all else fails, sometimes rescheduling is the only option. Given, this only works with sessions, and not with weddings. In that case, the first two options are the A vs B, but we can always make your photos look AMAZING no matter the atmospheric conditions. 😉

But, when you book a session with me, you get up to three months to choose a separate photo session date. Most of my clients find a date/time within the next week or so, and this time frame works best for everyone. You get amazing photos in weather you’re happy with, and no one gets drenched. Or windblown. Everyone’s happy, and you end up with phenomenal photos 🤩
